This is the most popular "all-around size" for domestic travel and short-haul international trips to places like Korea and Taiwan.

Its greatest feature is that it's carry-on compatible. You don't need to check it in, which reduces waiting time at the airport, making it ideal for business trips and quick getaways.

However, if you're flying with an LCC, "weight" becomes the biggest hurdle. Airlines like Jetstar and Spring Japan have a limit of 7kg total for the suitcase itself plus personal belongings. If the case itself is heavy, you won't be able to pack much.

Baggage rules vary significantly between airlines and routes.

In particular,ANA domestic flights from May 19, 2026 onwardswill undergo significant changes, so please be sure to check the rules before choosing your luggage size.

Key Points (ANA domestic checked baggage from May 19, 2026)

  • Size: Total dimensions (length + width + height) within 158cm (including casters and handles) → This is a significant tightening from the previous 203cm limit. If measured over at an automatic baggage drop-off machine, there is a high possibility of incurring an additional fee (approximately 5,500 yen).
  • Weight: For Economy Class, up to 23kg per bag is free (32kg for Premium Class).
  • Number of items: For Economy Class, generally up to 2 bags (may be 1 bag depending on the fare type).

For carry-on baggage (ANA/JAL wide-body aircraft)

  • Total dimensions within 115cm (目安: 55cm × 40cm × 25cm)
  • Total weight for carry-on baggage + personal items is within 10kg

For LCCs (Peach, Jetstar, etc.)

  • Many flights have a strict carry-on weight limit of within 7kg.
  • Since adding checked baggage incurs an extra fee, it is recommended to choose a lightweight suitcase.

This is because even for the same size, usability can vary considerably depending on the features. Especially when considering ANA's new regulations (within 158cm), choosing the right features becomes even more important.
