How to Wash and Care for Your Parasol | Basic Care to Make It Last Longer

Title

Even if you like your parasol, if you use it constantly, dirt, mold, and deterioration of its functionality will progress. This is especially true after heavy use while traveling.

However, many people may be wondering, "Can I wash a parasol?" or "Will improper care damage the parasol?"

In this blog, we will explain the correct way to wash, dry, and store your parasol step-by-step, making it easy for even first-time parasol care providers to follow.

Title

The following is a guideline for how often you should clean your parasol:

お手入れの種類 頻度の目安 主な目的
簡単な汚れ拭き 使うたびに ほこり・汗・花粉を除去
水洗い(丸洗い) 月1〜2回(使用頻度による) 皮脂・汚れのリセット
撥水スプレー補充 シーズンに1〜2回 晴雨兼用の機能維持
保管前の念入りケア シーズン終わりに1回 カビ・変色の予防

Especially after a trip, your umbrella is most likely soiled from prolonged sun exposure, sweat, and dust.

Developing the habit of giving it a quick clean right after returning home will help your umbrella last longer.

Title

Before washing your parasol, first check the "care label" on the tag or instructions. Accidentally washing materials or treated fabrics that are not washable can lead to a decrease in UV protection or damage to the fabric.

It's fine if the tag shows "hand wash mark" or "machine wash OK."

If it says "dry clean only" or has a crossed-out washing symbol, please avoid washing with water.

Title

Once you've confirmed it's washable, carefully follow these steps to clean it:

  1. Open the umbrella and brush off any dry dust with a soft brush or towel.
  2. Dilute a neutral detergent (like one for delicate clothes) with water, and gently wipe the entire umbrella with a sponge or soft cloth.
  3. Pay extra attention to areas that get particularly dirty, such as around the ribs and the base of the handle.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with a shower or running water (leftover detergent can cause discoloration).
  5. Lightly blot away excess water with a towel and air-dry the umbrella open in the shade.

  • Putting it in the washing machine (can deform the frame or damage the fabric)
  • Drying it in direct sunlight (can cause fading and degradation of the UV coating)
  • Drying it while closed (can make it prone to mold)
  • Using bleach (can cause fabric discoloration and reduce functionality)

Using a hairdryer just to "dry it faster" is also not recommended. The heat can cause the water-repellent coating to peel off.

Title

After washing, open the umbrella completely and dry it in a well-ventilated, shaded area. It should take 2-4 hours to dry completely. Water tends to collect at the joints of the ribs, so occasionally tilting the umbrella to drain the water will help ensure it dries thoroughly.

When washing a parasol that can be used in both clear and rainy weather, its water-repellent function will gradually deteriorate.

You can restore its function by using a water-repellent spray after drying.

Instructions for using water-repellent spray:

  1. Use when the umbrella is completely dry.
  2. Open the umbrella and spray evenly over the entire fabric (spray from a distance of 15-20cm).
  3. Fix by air drying or with a hairdryer on a cool setting.

Don't forget to work in a well-ventilated area after spraying. Avoid using it in a confined indoor space.

Title

To ensure your parasol lasts a long time, how you store it during the off-season is also important.

Improper storage can lead to mold and deformation.

  • Before storing
・Always dry completely before storing (moisture can cause mold)
・If dirt remains, wash before storing
    ・Replenish functionality with a water-repellent spray

  • Storage location and method
・Choose a place away from direct sunlight and with minimal temperature fluctuations
・Store upright in a case or bag (to prevent bending and deformation)
・For humid places (back of closets), include a dehumidifier
・If the ribs are steel, which rusts easily, it's safer to wipe them lightly with oil

If you store it with your travel gear, placing it upright in an outer pocket of a travel bag or an umbrella holder makes it easy to retrieve and helps maintain its shape.

Title

Even without extensive cleaning, small daily habits can significantly extend the life of your parasol.

"Wipe after use." This one simple step will greatly reduce the accumulation of dirt on your umbrella. If you make it a habit on the night you return from your trip, it will be easier to stick with it.
