FAQ: Questions about TSA locks

What is the default number for the TSA lock?

Most TSA locks are factory set to "0-0-0," so be sure to check that this setting works before changing it.

What should I do if I forget my TSA lock combination?

If you have forgotten your number, you can try the following methods:

・Brute force: For a three-digit number, there are only 1,000 possibilities, from "0-0-0" to "9-9-9." If you try each one, it will definitely open. It will take time, but it is possible to open it yourself.

・Contact the manufacturer: Depending on the suitcase manufacturer, they may be able to help you if you know the key number.

・Ask a locksmith: You can ask a professional locksmith to open it for you.

My suitcase doesn't come with a key, why? What is the keyhole for?

TSA locks are designed to be locked and unlocked by the customer using a PIN number, so they do not come with a customer-specific key. The keyhole is for a "master key" used by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers when inspecting luggage at US airports. TSA officers use this keyhole to open and inspect suitcases without damaging them.

How do you tell the difference between a TSA lock and other locks?

TSA locks have a specific marking that indicates they are approved by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). There are two main types:

- Red diamond mark: Found on TSA locks manufactured by Travel Sentry.

- Red torch mark: Found on TSA locks made by Safe Skies.

If you see these marks on the side of the keyhole or on the dial, you can tell it's a TSA lock. This marking allows TSA officers to open and inspect the lock using a special master key without destroying the lock. Other locks don't have these marks.

Is there anything I should pay attention to when turning the dial to set the number?

When setting numbers, please note the following:

- Don't forget the number: Be sure to write down the number you set, or set it to a number that is easy to remember.

- Align the dials correctly: Make sure the numbers are aligned correctly. If the numbers are misaligned, the setting may not be correct.

When setting up a number, what should I do if the reset button doesn't come back?

If the reset button does not return to its original position, it may be because the setting button was pressed too hard and is stuck, or there may be internal damage. Please try the following.

Try sliding the unlock button (e.g., lever) with some force. This usually returns the reset button to its original position.

If the problem persists, we recommend contacting the store where you purchased the product or the manufacturer's customer service.

After setting the TSA lock combination, is there a way to check if the new combination was set correctly?

Once the setup is complete, be sure to check it using the following steps:

- Dial the new combination you set and check that the lock opens.

Next, intentionally shift the dial to a different number and check that the lock closes. By performing these two checks, you can confirm that the new number has been set correctly.
