First up for sightseeing, you definitely can't miss Taipei 101. The modern tower sparkling at night is a breathtaking sight, and the night view of Taipei from the observatory is one of those "I'm so glad I came!" moments. The view from the 89th floor, especially at sunset, is incredibly romantic.

 

Another recommendation is Jiufen. Red lanterns sway in narrow alleys, creating a world reminiscent of Studio Ghibli's "Spirited Away." The sea view as you climb the slopes is also stunning, and you won't be able to stop taking photos.

 

And don't overlook the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, which offers free admission. When you think of Taiwan, you naturally think of food, right?

Shilin Night Market is a mecca for foodies. While the unique smell of stinky tofu makes me a little nervous (laughs), there's nothing better than digging into a hot pepper bun or a juicy chicken cutlet (ji-pai). I always end up finishing with bubble milk tea.

 

For xiao long bao, the original Din Tai Fung restaurant is in Taipei, and the soup overflowing from the thin wrappers is exquisite. At about 800 yen for 10 pieces, it's also incredibly cost-effective. Also, for breakfast, I recommend experiencing the local vibe by having soy milk (doujiang) and fried dough sticks (youtiao) at Yonghe Doujiang.

 

For sweets, it's fun to sample and choose souvenirs at Chia Te Bakery, a famous pineapple cake shop. Just eating elevates the satisfaction of your trip!

Entertainment: Active Fun Spots


For entertainment, there are plenty of places where you can enjoy both nature and activities.

Elephant Mountain is a hiking spot easily accessible from Taipei City, and after a 30-40 minute climb, a magnificent view overlooking Taipei 101 awaits. In spring, it's a pleasant climb, just enough to break a sweat, and going in the evening to see the night view is also excellent.

 

Also, at the Raohe Street Night Market, besides eating street food, you can enjoy the atmosphere by visiting the nearby Songshan Ciyou Temple to see the lit-up temple or strolling along the river.

 

If you want to enjoy more active fun, a one-hour trip from Taipei to Yehliu Geopark is also a good option, where you can feel the sea breeze while admiring the unique rock formations. Taiwan's charm lies in its ability to combine nature and activities in a short amount of time.

Culture: Experiencing Taiwan's History and Charm


Cultural experiences are also a highlight of a trip to Taiwan.

While package tours typically cost 100,000 to 150,000 yen for flights, hotels, and some sightseeing, you can arrange a similar experience for 70,000 to 100,000 yen by booking yourself.

However, for first-timers, the ease of a package tour can be appealing.

2. When is the best time to visit Taiwan?

Spring (March-May) and Autumn (October-November) are popular seasons due to their comfortable climate.

Especially March, with little rain and comfortable temperatures around 20°C. Summers are hot with a risk of typhoons, and winters are a bit chilly in the north, so spring and autumn are often recommended.

3. What to be careful about when packing for a trip to Taiwan?

Rain gear (folding umbrella or rain jacket) is essential. There can be sudden rain even in March. Comfortable shoes are also important; sneakers are recommended for places like Jiufen and night markets, where you'll be walking long distances. Also, don't forget your charger and power adapter (Taiwan mostly uses Type A, same as Japan, but it's good to check).

4. Do I need a visa to travel to Taiwan?

Japanese nationals do not need a visa for tourism purposes if their stay is within 90 days.

However, your passport must be valid for at least the duration of your stay. You may be asked to fill out a "Taiwan Entry Card" upon arrival, so it's advisable to prepare it in advance for a smoother process.

5. How do I get around?

In Taipei, the MRT (subway) is convenient and affordable (TWD 20-40 per ride). If you buy an EasyCard (an IC card similar to Suica), you can also use buses, which is a great deal. Taxis are also cheaper than in Japan, with an initial fare of around TWD 85 (approx. JPY 415), so you can use them freely.
